Pension Credit: Helping Protect At Risk Pensioners from Energy Bill Cuts

As winter 2024 approaches, pensioners across the UK face significant changes in government support for energy bills. With the reduction of winter fuel payments from covering 11.4 million to just 1.5 million pensioners, many are at risk of increased financial strain. However, those eligible for pension credit can still access crucial support.

Currently, up to 880,000 low-income pensioner households are missing out on this benefit. Pension credit, averaging £3,900 a year, not only boosts income but also provides access to additional benefits, including housing support, council tax relief, and the winter fuel payment.

The government is urging those eligible to apply for pension credit before 21 December 2024 to ensure they receive their winter fuel payment. With so many missing out due to misunderstandings about eligibility or reluctance to accept what they view as handouts, it's vital that pensioners check if they qualify.

In light of these cuts, the government and opposition are at odds over the impact of these decisions. Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall emphasises support for low-income pensioners, while Conservative Laura Trott criticises the government's handling of the situation.

To ensure you or your loved ones don’t miss out on this essential support, check eligibility for pension credit today and claim before the deadline. This simple step could mean the difference between struggling through the winter and staying warm and secure.

In light of the reduction in winter fuel payments, at Winter Warm Packs we have retained prices on our winter warm packs from the previous winter.
